As well as you teaching your dog to obey you through the use of verbal commands, you can also teach them to obey you when you only use hand signals instead. When it does come to you teaching your dog about such commands you will need to use them in conjunction with verbal commands in the beginning. In this article, we look at one of the ways in which dog training hand commands can be accomplished.

Teaching a dog how to obey hand commands rather than verbal ones can be achieved very simply. It will require some patience on your part, but having a few treats available when they do react in the right way can help things progress a lot more quickly and smoothly.

It is important that in the beginning when you are teaching your dog to react to hand commands is that you use the words as well. Therefore, you will need to decide which hand signals relate to which commands you will be giving to your dog. Only once you have made a decision on which verbal commands go with which hand signals can you then start your dogs training.

In the beginning as you, say each command to your dog you should also very slowly and deliberately show the hand signal as well. You will need to repeat the verbal command and the hand signal several times in order for your dog to understand what it is you would like them to do. Then once they react the first time to you saying the word and doing the hand signal then you can reward them.

With this kind of training you will need to repeat the verbal commands every time you do the hand signals in the beginning, then as time progresses you need to start eliminating the verbal ones. Although you should be still praising your dog and offering them rewards these should only be offered when they actually respond to the hand commands and not the verbal ones as well. It is a good idea to very slowly and gradually stop using the verbal commands and replace them with hand ones only.

After a period of time when they have begun to purely respond to your hand commands then you can start beginning to eliminate the food rewards also. It is crucial that you do not stop providing such treats as soon as they start responding to hand commands, but gradually eliminate them and instead offer your dog praise instead.

When you are going to be teaching your dog to respond to hand commands rather than verbal ones it is a good idea to start of with the most basic commands that you want your dog to respond to. Most owners will start of with the ones we all learn in the beginning with our dogs, which is sit, stay, down and come. Only once you feel that you and your dog are ready should you be moving on to commands that are far more elaborate.

Actually getting advice on the right way dog training hand commands should be done is easy. There are plenty of sites on the internet today that can offer lots of practical advice and tips. Plus there are plenty of books and videos, which can help you with training your dog to respond to such hand signals.

Pets provide companionship, security, and a sense of comfort; and more than 70 percent of the United States households have a dog or cat. However, people with allergies need to be careful when trying to decide which kind of pet they can safely bring home.

Exposure to a pet may cause sneezing and wheezing. An estimated 10 percent of the population may be allergic to animals. Higher rates of 20 to 30 percent of people with asthma have pet allergies.

Human Allergies to Dogs

There are thousands of people who suffer from allergies to animals. Some of the most heartbreaking cases are people who dearly love their dog and then develop a severe allergy to her and must decide between keeping her or placing the dog in a new home.

The parts of the animal that people are most allergic to are the dander, the saliva, or the urine. Because dogs and cats are the most common pets, they top the list of pets people are also allergic to. In addition to this factor, people may be allergic to certain types of dogs and not to others.

What are the Symptoms?

People who have multiple allergies may be aware when their allergies are responding; they may suffer from runny noses, itchy eyes, asthma symptoms, red itchy skin, or a rash. Those that are not aware of their allergies may think that they simply have a cold.

Are there any hypoallergenic dogs?

No, there are no hypoallergenic dogs. All dogs shed, but some do more than others. That is primarily because some have a denser coat of hair than do other breeds. It is not the hair that people are allergic to anyway, it is the dander. Some breeds of dogs do seem to have less dander and these include: Terriers, Poodles, and Schnauzers. Many people can be allergic to one type of dogs and not another.

How can a person reduce allergic symptoms to a pet?

If you or a member of your family is part of the population allergic to pets, there are things that you can do to help keep your reactions under control. You can do some of the following to make your home more comfortable for you to live: Clean and vacuum regularly, bathe your pet weekly, do not allow your pet on the furniture, do not allow your pet in your car, and brush your pet daily.

It is impossible to avoid contact with animals since they are a very integral part of our lives. But, when you adopt some good management techniques, you make your allergies less painful and your dog much happier. Together, you can live happily ever after.

As a responsible dog owner, it is your duty to stop aggressive dog behavior, should you find one in your dog. Not only will you be saving your own dog’s life from danger, you’ll also be preventing any untoward incident from happening between your dog and other people’s lives. Dog training and stopping aggressive behavior, though, is not easy. It requires a step-by-step process, just like any other method of correction.

Step 1: Discover the reason for aggression.

Managing aggressive dogs should begin with awareness. You should know that dogs are not dumb animals and that they usually have a reason for being aggressive. It is possible for example that a dog may only be exhibiting his natural tendency to be dominant. Your dog may feel that it is the alpha creature in the house and will react negatively to any attempts that seem to undermine its superiority. It is also possible that aggressive dog behavior is the result of traumatic experiences. Your dog may have been subjected to violent treatment in the past.

There are other reasons for dog aggression. Whatever the reason for your dog’s aggressive behavior, it is up to you, as the owner, to identify what they are. Some information on dog psychology will definitely keep you on the right track on how to curb your dog’s aggressive behavior.

Step 2: Find the most ideal training program for your dog.

Dog obedience training is the best way to stop aggressive dog behavior. However, there are several approaches to dog training though. Find the most suitable one based on what your dog needs most. There are several options and one of these is enrolling your dog in a professional training class. This will make sure that your dog is being trained by skilled professionals. Another thing to remember is that trainers and have different levels of expertise in dog training. Make a thorough search on the best trainer in your area for your dog.

One other option is to train your dog yourself. If you love animals and have a natural instinct for handling dogs, this may be no problem for you. Of course, if you are not a professional trainer, you should consider taking some cues from real experts. Read up on tips and techniques for managing aggression in dogs. It is important for example to learn vital verbal commands that dogs interpret and react to.

Step 3: Show affection and understanding for your dog.

Don’t be frustrated if your dog continues to manifest aggressive behavior. It’s quite possible that you’ve already enrolled him in obedience training or you may have even trained them yourself but this does not guarantee that your dog will change overnight or over one week. Training a dog and correcting a behavior takes time and patient.

You also have to remember that dogs have different personalities. Your approach may not always lead to outstanding changes in your dog. Take note of slight changes in your dog’s behavior so you can find out whether you should continue one strategy or switch to another.

There is no question about it. You have to stop aggressive dog behavior. All you need is the right technique and perseverance. Your dog deserves nothing less.

by Jan Ryan

The German Shepherd dog has a relatively short history though it is a well-loved and well-worked dog today. The breed began in Germany in 1899 and was registered with the American Kennel Club (AKC) in 1911. By World War I, over 48,000 German Shepherds were enlisted in the German army. Though the breed is part of the herding group, the German Shepherd dog has many other talents and can be trained in a variety of fields.

German Shepherds are native to Germany. The first of the breed was a sheep-herding dog. This dog, given the name Horand von Grafath, became the first German Shepherd registered in the German Shepherd Dog Club of Germany in 1899. The breed was registered with the AKC in 1911. German Shepherd breeders are common in North America due to the high demand not only for purebred German Shepherds, but for Shepherds with specific training. A German Shepherd breeder may specialize in training this breed for the visually impaired, for the police, and for use in tracking and protection. The Germans have a special training program for Shepherds to become “Schutzhunds,” or protection dogs.

There are a few precautions any potential German Shepherd buyer should take before making a purchase of a purebred German Shepherd dog. First, know what you are looking for. Second, know what purpose you plan to utilize the German Shepherd for. Third, know what it takes to care for a German Shepherd. Fourth, know where to find a reputable breeder.

A good German Shepherd breeder will be able to provide you with documentation of the dog’s pedigree and medical history. Because German Shepherds are prone to many skeletal disorders, especially of the hip, the breeder should also include a warranty or statement that the dog has been evaluated for these issues. Getting documentation is also a good way to make sure your Shepherd is purebred as well determining what accomplishments the dog has in his ancestry. Most German Shepherds are trained and certified in many areas and a pedigree will list these achievements.

Make sure you know how to properly care for your German Shepherd and ask advice from the breeder on diet, exercise, and general training. A reputable breeder should have his or her own kennel and your German Shepherd should have received daily socialization, exercise and grooming as well as good nutrition and exposure to other animals. Lastly, make sure you have a purpose for buying a German Shepherd. This intelligent, hard-working breed is happiest when its owner gives it daily tasks to complete.

Now that you know what to look for in a German Shepherd and a German Shepherd breeder, you are ready to find the perfect German Shepherd. There is an alternative to buying a purebred puppy from a breeder. Reputable breeders are usually affiliated with or run rescue centers. A German Shepherd rescue center houses Shepherds that have been abused, abandoned or neglected.

Unfortunately, many German Shepherds, among other dog breeds, are raised in what are termed puppy mills, where breeders continuously make the dogs produce litters with no regard for the adult’s health and happiness. Breeders who run illegal puppy mills are even worse than those trying to sell fake purebred dogs.

Rescue centers re-socialize the dogs and foster or adopt them out to loving homes. Consider a rescued German Shepherd as an alternative when buying your dog.

What is life with Golden Retrievers like? Because of their personalities, quite good if you are willing and able to properly care for your Golden Retriever. The puppies are notorious for being hyperactive and more than a handful so don’t get a puppy if you can’t handle the mess and the time needed to properly train them. This is one breed where it is definitely an advantage to adopt an adult from a rescue center rather than get a puppy.

This shows the big contrast between Golden Retriever temperaments and the temperaments of most other dog breeds. Although every dog is an individual, for the most part Golden Retrievers are calm, trainable and submissive. However, they need proper nutrition, grooming and exercise to get this good-natured and stay this good-natured. Golden Retrievers aren’t the perfect dogs, but for many they are worth their weight in gold for their personalities. If you are ever saddled with a Golden Retriever, you could do a lot worse.

These dogs were bred to be highly active, running miles through the rain in order to retrieve killed game for his master. Although the main job of a Golden Retriever has changed, the attitude is still the same. These dogs need to be busy. They need regular exercise and to be in the middle of family life or they will find something to occupy their time ? which can mean they might do things you don’t want them to do.

The behavioral problems Golden Retrievers are most prone to are hyperactivity (in young dogs) and separation anxiety. Keeping the dog on a proper diet and a regular exercise routine will help to lessen both problems.

Although following the Golden Retriever information and advice on websites and dog training books can often cure both of these problems, don’t be afraid to get professional help. These are big, strong dogs who can know you over.

You can greatly help your Golden Retriever’s behavior, trainability and health by getting your dog spayed or neutered. The dog will already be neutered if you adopt from a Golden Retriever rescue center. Neutering makes the dog more relaxed, more willing to accept people as the ones in charge and less likely to run away in search of love. Neutered dogs also tend to live longer and get less cancer.

You also cannot skimp on regular veterinary care. Golden Retrievers are prone to eye diseases, although they can adjust well to being blind. They are also prone to hip dysplasia, but that can be partially prevented and often successfully treated.

There is a big effort by responsible Golden Retriever breeders to weed out all unhealthy Golden Retrievers from the breeding population. On average, Golden Retrievers live to be between ten and twelve years old.

by Mason Harding

There are 2 extreme schools of thought when it comes to a dog digging holes in your garden: one, that a dog is a dog and he’s going to dig, and he should be allowed to express his true doggy nature whenever and wherever he wants; and two, that a flowerbed is reserved for flowers, and if that dog even sets foot in it he’s in big trouble.

My feeling is really both. While it is a dog’s nature to dig and you want to let them be a dog as much as possible, I think you can have both a beautiful yard and a happy dog. This involves you being ready to train him so that this can happen.

If you’re reading this article, you’ve probably already got a dog digging problem and it’s too late for you to find out that certain dogs like Huskies, Malamutes, and Terriers are notorious diggers. If by chance you’re just doing some research and are about to head off to the shelter to see who’s available, you may want to keep these breeds in the back of your mind as possible candidates for dog digging problems.

Let’s start with why dogs dig.

1. Not enough exercise. Digging gives them a way to burn off all their energy.

2. Bored. Dogs like to have a job to do and if they don’t, digging is one job they will find to do.

3. I gotta get outta here! Some dogs just want to see the world, and the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence. These guys are nearly impossible to confine, no matter how much exercise and attention they get.

Then how do we make them stop?

Obviously, you can get busy with dogs, getting them out and about. Or give him something constructive to do if he’s bored, like a toy to play with. Better still combine the two, and play fetch.

Use a natural deterrent. Dogs hate to dig where there is their own poop - even if they occasionally eat it! (For more information on dog poop-eating, visit the website below) If it can be arranged for there to be dog poop where he likes to dig, that might help.

You’ve tried everything and he just won’t stop digging - now what? It probably makes sense that he needs to dig. Your job is to find a spot that you can live with and start training him to use that place only. The size of your place doesn’t limit this from working.

A filter for water is essential for healthy drinking water, and many homes and office spaces can benefit from installing a water filtration system. The average person needs at least eight glasses of water per day to stay healthy, and the more pure and clean this water source is, the higher the chances of long-term health.

Contaminated water can lead to numerous skin disorders, diseases, and even cancer. Without adequate water, dehydration, exhaustion, and fatigue can occur, and may lead to additional health problems. Toxic water can damage the body’s immune system, and spread infections or viruses.

Always Filter Your Water

Having purified, safe drinking water is not hard with a water filtration system. There are a variety of systems available, from countertop, portable, refrigerator, and pitcher systems. Bottled water may seem like a good source of filtered water, but this source is widely unregulated. Filtering your water is a cost-effective way to ensure you have the water you need to maintain your health.

Home water filtrations systems can provide an easy-accessible and simple system to obtain healthy water on a regular basis. Water purifiers may involve tablets or devices that meet higher EPA standards, and these are also available for homes and offices.

Filtering, Removes Water Contaminants

Filters will help remove water contaminants such as chlorine, carbon, lead, and other particles or chemicals that cause contamination. Filters may be installed directly onto a tap, attached to a dispenser, or used with a pitcher. Filtered water is free of toxic chemicals, particles, minerals, and contaminants that can cause disease. Micro-organisms and bacteria can also quickly contaminate drinking water, but a water filtration system will remove most of these immediately.

Unfiltered water can have a bad taste or smell, and may contribute to viruses and other infections. Implementing some form of a water filtration system is an efficient way to reduce the risks of poor health.

Gallon aquariums not only come in a wide range of sizes, but shapes also. You can get small ones that hold only 5 gallons of water, and others which can hold 200 or more gallons of water. It does not matter what size gallon aquarium you choose to buy; you will need to know how to maintain them if you want fish and marine life including corals that make up a reef thrive.

When devising the budget for buying any size of gallon aquarium, you need to factor in the cost of the other equipment needed to set it up, in order to create the perfect freshwater or saltwater environment for the aquatic life residing in it. So, before you buy, it is a good idea to understand even just the basics to owning an aquarium, as this will help you to decide just which is the right kind of gallon aquarium for you.

Gallon Aquariums - What Kinds Can You Get?

When it comes to purchasing any size of gallon aquarium, you can either purchase one that is made from glass, or one that is made from acrylic. Each come with their own pros and cons, and below we look at what some of these are. First off, let us take a look at those gallon aquariums made from glass.

1. A glass gallon aquarium, compared to an acrylic one, is much cheaper to buy. 2. This version of a gallon aquarium is far more resilient and actually is less prone to scratching, compared to those that are made from acrylic. 3. The major disadvantage of the glass versions of gallon aquariums, is not only are they far heavier, but also they are much bulkier because of the frames that surround them.

We are now going to look at some of the advantages and disadvantages of acrylic gallon aquariums over the glass ones.

1. Acrylic gallon aquariums, because of the way they are constructed (without a frame, just the edges sealed), are much tidier looking. Also the way in which they are sealed is far stronger than the way in which glass ones are, so they are less likely to leak. 2. The biggest advantage that acrylic gallon aquariums have over glass ones, is that they weigh much less. But you need to be aware that acrylic can easily scratch, so you need to be careful when cleaning it. 3. Finally glass and acrylic gallon aquariums both come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes, but the way acrylic ones are constructed, offers you the chance to go for something a little more unusual. So in fact you have even more choices on finding a tank that meets your requirements perfectly.

Another Thing To Consider Before You Buy A Gallon Aquarium

It is important that when you go out to buy your gallon aquarium, no matter its size, you should make sure that you have the right base on which it will stand. It should be one that will be able to easily hold the weight of the aquarium with all the equipment, water and marine life in it. If it cannot, then the chances of the tank cracking or leaking is greatly increased.

Having a 150 gallon aquarium provides you with the opportunity to keep a wide variety of different species of fish, if you wish. If you want to turn your hobby, from just keeping tropical fish into one where you have a complete reef environment, then having a 150 gallon aquarium will allow you the chance to do this.

However, it is important that you think things through carefully before you undertake such a project. The first thing you need to determine, is whether you actually have the space in your home to fit in a 150 gallon aquarium, which you will then be able to keep popular breeds of tropical fish such as the Clownfish in.

You need to aware that the setting up and installation of a 150 gallon aquarium could take some time, and you will need plenty of patience to do it. In fact what you will find is that actually getting the environment right for any kind of fish or marine life, such as corals, seahorses and starfish to live in your 150 gallon aquarium, will take some time to actually achieve.

150 Gallon Aquarium - What Kinds Of Fish Can You Keep In Them?

Of course the first decision you need to decide upon before you even set up a 150 gallon aquarium, is whether you want to keep saltwater or freshwater fish in yours. By going for a saltwater reef aquarium, you have the opportunity to keep some of the world’s most beautiful looking species of fish in it. In this article we look at some of the types of tropical fish that you can keep in a saltwater reef aquarium, and all of which are relatively easy to look after.

1. The Purple Tang (Zebrasoma Xanthurus) 2. The Yellow Stripe Maroon Clownfish (Premnas Biaculeatus) - Also referred to as the Maroon Anemone Fish, Spinecheek Anemone Fish or the Maroon and Gold Stripe 3. The Sea Anemone (Entacmaea Quardicolor)

Why Choose These Fish For Your 150 Gallon Aquarium

Ideally the Purple Tang is a breed of tropical fish which likes to live in tanks that contain more than 100 gallons of water, so putting them into a 150 gallon aquarium is ideal for this species. They are herbivores and so putting in plenty of fresh plants for them to feed off of is crucial, and you need to be aware that they can be extremely territorial and act aggressively towards other species of fish and marine life. Make sure that the other fish that you place in the aquarium with them, are compatible.

As for the Clownfish, these make a wonderful addition to any size of reef tank, including a 150 gallon aquarium, because they come in a multitude of colors. The one we discuss here is very distinctive because of the yellow stripe to be found on its forehead, body and tail. Plus of all the species we discuss in this article, the Clownfish is one of the easiest of them all to keep.

The Sea Anemone is a species of fish that really is worth considering having in a 150 gallon aquarium. They not only like and get along with Clownfish, including the one mentioned in this article, but find it easy to live in any size of aquarium.

Aggression in a dog is something that no owner should allow to continue and as soon as the problem arises, needs to be dealt with through the right sort of corrective training. But in order for an owner to find the right sort of dog aggression training to help solve the problem they first need to understand a little about the types of aggression a dog may suffer from.

In this article, we look at the various kinds of aggressive behavior, which dogs of different ages, breeds and genders may well suffer from. Also, what one should also remember is that a dog may actually show more than one type of aggression towards others at any time.

1. Dominance - This kind of aggression will occur in a dog who thinks that they are in fact the alpha member (leader of the pack) and will use this as a way of asserting their dominance over the others in the pack (you and your family). Most commonly, you will find that male dogs and certain dog breeds are likely to suffer from this kind of aggressive behavior more. But in order for you to control the situation, you need to quickly and fairly establish that you and your family are the leaders in the group and they are at the bottom of the pack hierarchy.

2. Fear - This is type of aggression occurs when a dog feels insecure or frightened. They will often react to a disturbance or when being approached by either barking, growling, they may bare their teeth, snap or bite. In some cases, if they feel cornered or threatened they may actually bite. It is important that you do not think that your dog will grow out of this problem, as they will not.

3. Territorial or Over Protective - This type of aggression in a dog could cause them to be a danger to anyone (not just strangers). They will not only feel territorial about the things in your home, but will also feel territorial when they are out walking with you.

4. Possessive - A dog may react lovingly towards you one moment, and then the next could be baring their teeth and growling at you. Often this will occur when the dog feels threatened and that you are likely to take away from them something that they have. This problem can often occur in dogs at feeding time; especially when they are young and they are having to fight with their brothers and sisters to get food. If you find your dog reacting in such a way to any toy or their food you need to immediately start working on ways to control it.

5. Punishment - This kind of aggressive behavior occurs more often in those animals where punishment has been used excessively by their owners. Although initially when being punished the dog may not respond aggressively towards their owner, if over time the punishments become more severe then the chances of the dog responding in such a way is greatly increased.

In this article, we have looked at just a few of the kinds of aggressive behavior that dogs may suffer from. It is only once the owner has identified what kind of behavior it is they can then find the right kind of dog aggression training to use. As you will soon find when you search the internet there is plenty of advice and tips on ways of dealing with an aggressive dog.
